16–19 Bursary Fund
Students aged 16 to 19 who are most in need (students in care, care leavers, students claiming Income Support, disabled young people who receive Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance) will be eligible to receive a Bursary of £1,200 a year. This Bursary will be administered and paid through St Birinus for boys and Didcot Girls’ School for girls.
In addition the DSFC will be able to award a bursary to other students aged 16 to 19 who face genuine financial difficulties. This is at the discretion of DSFC and within set eligibility criteria. The support provided for students could be financial or provision of items in kind and it is at the DSFC’s discretion to decide on the amount and type of support that is awarded to the student.
The Criteria for the award is as follows:
- Eligible for Free School Meals
- In receipt of Tax Credit, Income Support, Disability Living Allowance or other welfare payments.
- Students facing difficult domestic circumstances.
The student must have their own bank account into which the Bursary or financial payment will be made. In order for the student to receive financial support they must meet the basic expectations of DSFC in terms of attendance, punctuality and progress.
Parents need to complete an application form and provide the necessary evidence in order for us to assess whether the student is eligible. The evidence required is set out as follows:
- Household income – evidenced by a P60
- Receipt of benefit, Tax Credit Award Notice
- Evidence of self employment income
If it is decided to make a financial award the payment will be on a termly basis via BACS. However, if it has been deemed relevant to provide in kind this will be done on an individual basis.
Students will be able to collect an application form, a detailed list of the type of evidence that can be used and a Frequently Asked Questions sheet from the Sixth Form Offices at either site from Monday 12th September 2016. Forms will also be available from Main Reception at either school. Receipt of this completed form will activate the assessment process which will identify whether your son/daughter is eligible for financial support and to what extent. Please bear in mind that as this is quite a time consuming process there may be a delay in payment due to processing procedures. However, back payments will be made to the date of application.
The deadline for the submission of all applications for academic year 2016-2017 is Friday 7 October 2016 to Reception. However, ‘one off’ cases will be considered throughout the year.
